What is a C2PA Manifest?

A C2PA Manifest is the provenance structure associated with an asset. Depending on the asset and its manifest, it can contain claims and assertions about provenance, ingredients from earlier assets, and recorded provenance actions. The manifest is cryptographically signed as part of the C2PA provenance system. A manifest does not automatically make every statement in it true.

What a C2PA Manifest does not prove

A valid or trusted C2PA provenance record does not by itself prove that every statement in the record is true. C2PA records evidence about provenance and its cryptographic relationships. It is not a general-purpose truth detector or an automatic AI detector. A file without a readable C2PA Manifest does not necessarily mean the file is fake or AI-generated.

Does every image have a C2PA Manifest?

No. C2PA data must be added by a supported capture or editing workflow. Its absence is common and does not prove that an image is fake or AI-generated.

Does a C2PA Manifest prove an image is authentic?

No. A valid signature can show that a manifest is bound to the inspected file, but it does not confirm that every recorded claim is true.

Can I inspect a C2PA Manifest without uploading the file?

Yes. Parsing and verification run locally in your browser. The file is not uploaded for inspection.

What is the difference between the Manifest Viewer and the C2PA Metadata Inspector?

The Manifest Viewer focuses on manifest structure and technical data. The Metadata Inspector condenses important fields into a property table.
